The Aegean Airlines pet policy for 2024 includes various options for flying with dogs or cats in the cabin and hold. Aegean Airlines is one of the handful of airlines that permits small cats and dogs to fly in the cabin to the EU from many UK airports. The price varies for flying pets in the cabin, or in the hold as checked baggage or cargo hold, and depends on the route, method of travel and the size of your pet. Aegean Airlines pet travel rules do not allow for cats and dogs on certain flights, or to specific international destinations. In addition, the Aegean Airlines dog policy doesn’t accept certain breeds either in the cabin or hold, though there is a possibility that they may be transported by Aegean Airlines Cargo. Only professionally trained Assistance & Service Animals are permitted to fly in the Aegean cabin free of charge. . You can also check out reviews for Aegean Airlines by fellow pet travellers to discover how their pet policy is experienced in practice. And, of course, remember to leave a review if you fly your cat or dog in the cabin or hold with Aegean Airlines! Read on for the full Aegean Airlines cat and dog policy for 2024.
If you adore animals, you’ll be pleased to hear that Aegean refuses to transport animals being used for laboratory testing or scientific research. Definitely a huge thumbs up from Django & Arya!

Does Aegean Airlines Allow Pets in the Cabin?
The only pets permitted to fly in the Aegean Airlines cabin are cats and dogs. All cats and dogs travelling in the passenger cabin can’t exceed a weight of 8kg whilst in their airline pet carrier.
Under the Aegeain Airlines Cat & Dog Policy for 2024, one pet carrier in the cabin is permitted per passenger. However, pets of the same species may travel together in the same travel carrier. Though, in this case, all pets combined with their travel carrier can’t weigh more than 8kg.
The travel bag or kennel must meet the Aegean Airlines’ specifications outlined in their pet travel policy. The cat or dog travel carrier may have maximum dimensions of :
- L 55 cm x W 40 cm x H 23 cm
- For DH8-100, DH8-400 and ATR aircraft, L 40 cm x W 25 cm x H 25 cm
On the flight, the travel bag will be stowed underneath the seat in front of you, you can’t remove your cat or dog during the flight for safety reasons.
Passengers travelling with a cat or dog in the Aegean Airlines cabin must be seated at a window seat, which can’t be in the first row of the aircraft, or in the emergency exit rows.
Be aware that if you are travelling with an infant, you’re unable to take a cat or dog in the Aegean Airlines cabin with you.
On intercontinental flights, your cat or dog isn’t allowed to fly in the passenger cabin.
IATA Regulations for Cats & Dogs Flying in the Cabin
While you need to ensure that your pet’s travel crate meets the maximum dimensions set by Aegean Airlines to fly in the cabin, remember that you must also adhere to the Live Animal Regulations (LAR) set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This includes calculating the minimum inner crate dimensions allowed by the IATA LAR for your cat or dog to fly in the cabin. In addition, the airline pet travel carrier must adhere to the IATA LAR, in terms of ventilation, design etc.

On domestic flights within Greece, Aegean Airlines kindly gives you a disposable pet travel carrier if you arrive at the airport without a suitable cat or dog container!
Aegean Airlines Pets in Cabin Price
A set fee is applied to all pets flying in the Aegean Airlines cabin. Note that the charge is per pet travel carrier, not per pet, and that the stated fee is per leg of the journey if your trip includes connecting flights.

Aegean Airlines Pet in Hold as Checked Baggage
If your cat or dog weighs more than 8kg, they must travel in the hold in accordance with the Aegean Airlines international pet travel policy for 2024. But, Aegean accepts only cats and dogs in the hold of Airbus 319, 320 and 321, or DH8-Q400 aircraft.
During the winter, your pet cat or dog may not travel in the hold on Aegean Airlines Cityhopper flights (Embraer 175 and Embraer 190) for longer than two hours.
It’s important to note that cats and dogs may not be allowed to travel in the Aegean Airlines aircraft hold if you have a flight connection exceeding 3 hours.
To fly in the hold, the maximum dimensions for your cat or dog’s travel crate are L 105 cm x W 75 cm x H 79 cm.
Each passenger may take up to five pet travel kennels in the Aegean Airlines hold, however, this number is offset against any other luggage or special equipment that you check in for the flight.
IATA Requirements for Pets Flying in Hold
For the safety of your pet during air transport, the airline travel kennel must meet the legal requirements of the Live Animal Regulations (LAR) set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Therefore, in addition to ensuring that your cat or dog in their travel crate adheres to the maximum weight and dimensions set by Aegean Airlines, the minimum inner kennel dimensions defined by the IATA LAR must also be met.
You can calculate the minimum inner space permitted by the IATA LAR, in addition to learning about the required construction, design etc for the pet in hold travel crate.
Should you need a new travel kennel, check out 4 Popular IATA Compliant Pet in Hold Crates.
Aegean Airlines Pets in Hold Price

Aegean Airlines Pet Policy 2024 for Dogs & Cats Flying as Cargo or Freight
In some cases, your pet may have to fly as cargo, rather than as checked baggage. For instance, if you’re travelling on a different flight as your pet, or you’re flying to a country that doesn’t permit pets to arrive in the cabin. For instance, all animals, including cats and dogs must arrive in the United Kingdom (UK) as cargo, they can’t enter in the passenger cabin or in the hold as checked baggage. For flights to the UK, Aegean Airlines only transports cats and dogs as cargo, due to legislation set by the UK Department for Agriculture, Environment, Forestry and Agriculture.
Your dog will also have to travel as cargo if their kennel exceeds the maximum Aegean Airlines dimensions of L 105 cm x W 75 cm x H 79 cm for pets flying in the hold as checked baggage.
As is the case for all pet friendly airlines, flying a pet as cargo is more expensive than in the cabin, or in the hold as checked baggage.
To transport your pet as cargo, you will need to contact Aegean Airlines Cargo. Their email address is info-cargo@aegeanair.com.
Snub-Nosed Cat & Dog Breed Policy for Aegean
Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) animals, such as French Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian Cats, can have trouble breathing during the flight, due to high temperatures and stress. To ensure their well-being, most snub-nosed (brachycephalic) animals may not be transported in the hold. This means that these pets can only fly in the Aegean Airlines cabin, they aren’t allowed to travel as either checked baggage or cargo in the hold of the plane.
When flying with a snub-nosed pet in the cabin, remember that you need to add 10% to your IATA compliant pet carrier calculation.
Aegean Airlines only transports the following cat and dog breeds in the passenger cabin of the aircraft However, if the dog breed is also on the Aegean Airlines potentially dangerous dogs list, they are unable to travel.

Aegean Airlines Travel Policy for Assistance & Service Dogs 2024
You may travel with your Assistance or Service Dog in the cabin free of charge with Aegean Airlines. It’s recommended that you make the request during booking and no less than 48 hours prior to departure. But try to make the reservation as far in advance as possible. All reservations for Assistance & Service Dogs must be made through the Aegean Airlines Call Centre.
Your Assistance or Service Dog must be fully trained and accredited by one of the following organisations:
- Assistance Dogs International (ADI)
- International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF)
At airport check in, you’ll be asked for the original documentation for your Assistance or Service Dog, and they must also wear their identifying harness and vest. During the flight, your dog will sit between your feet.
Aegean Airlines allows each passenger to take one accredited Assistance or Service Dog in the cabin, while an additional Assistance or Service Dog may fly in the hold.
However, be aware that some international countries don’t permit Assistance & Service Dogs to arrive in the plane cabin. Fortunately, this isn’t the case when flying in Europe or North America.
With Aegean Airlines having top marks already for refusing to transport animals to laboratories, and providing free pet carriers for in cabin domestic routes, they also transport Rescue Dogs travelling with Rescue Workers to deal with emergency situations. This is quite a novel approach for a pet friendly airline, so hats off for permitting Rescue Dogs to travel under the Aegean Airlines Assistance & Service Dog Policy. We like your style!
Aegean Airlines Policy for Emotional Support Animals & Psychiatric Service Dogs
Aegean Airlines no longer accepts Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) for travel, due to the 2021 ruling by the US Department of Transport (USDoT). Only registered and professionally trained Assistance & Service Dogs or Rescue Dogs are accepted to travel in the cabin free of charge.
Note that Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSVDs) differ from ESAs, as they have been professionally trained to perform a specific task, or tasks, for their owner, therefore they can travel with Aegean Airlines on routes to and from the US. In this case, you must complete the USDoT Psychiatric Service Dog Application Form, then submit it to Aegean Airlines.
All pets other than Assistance & Service Dogs, including Emotional Support Animals, must adhere to the standard Aegean Airlines Cat & Dog Policy for 2024, and therefore comply with the size, weight and breed restrictions.
Pet Travel Documentation & Vaccines
Aegean Airlines is a Greek international pet friendly airline, so for flights within the EU, your cat or dog has to meet the EU Pet Travel Scheme criteria. This means that you’ll need to arrange either a Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate, and ensure that your cat or dog is microchipped and vaccinated against Rabies.
Also, Aegean Airlines is one of the few transatlantic pet friendly airlines, therefore for flights to North America, your pet must meet the requirements of the pet travel schemes in the USA and Canada.
You can also check out the laws for taking a cat or dog to other worldwide destinations in 2024.
Excluded Pet Routes with Aegean
Due to government pet travel rules, you can’t fly your cat or dog in the cabin to certain countries. These rules are in place in some pet friendly destinations that are currently rabies free, in order to protect their borders.
For example, when flying to the United Kingdom (Scotland, England, Wales & Northern Ireland), all pets arriving on a plane must travel as cargo in the hold. Aegean Airlines only takes pets in the hold as cargo on flights to London Heathrow Airport.
As already stated, some countries don’t permit Assistance & Service Dogs to arrive in the cabin.
The Aegean Airlines Cat & Dog Policy for 2024 also states that pets can’t fly in the hold of their Boeing 787-9 and Boeing 787-10 aircraft. So always check with Aegean Airlines first if your desired flight is serviced by one of these airplanes.
Are Pets Safe on Planes?
If you’re worried about your furry travel companion’s wellbeing when flying, check out our comprehensive post regarding pet safety on planes. While in the USA, a monthly report is provided for airline pet incident rates, there isn’t an equivalent in Europe at the moment. So, there’s no data available for incidents when flying pets in the hold with Aegean Airlines. Note that even the airline pet incident reports submitted in the USA are only for cats and dogs flying in the hold, and don’t include any in cabin events.
No doubt, at some point your trip will involve a car ride, so have a look at our 12 Essential Pet Car Safety Tips too. Should your cat or dog suffer from motion sickness, we’ve also compared some of the treatments, strategies and medications for pet travel nausea.
It’s important to be aware that you can’t sedate or tranquilize your cat or dog for their flight, whether your pet, or pets, are travelling in the Aegean Airlines cabin or hold.
In addition, to protect your pet’s health and wellbeing in a new country, be sure to keep your cat or dog safe from vector-borne diseases. In particular, Heartworm from mosquitoes and Leishmaniasis from sandflies in Southern European destinations pose a serious threat.
