What is a Pet Friendly Hotel?
It may seem obvious that a pet friendly hotel is one that allows your furry companion to stay in your room. However, each hotel has their own pet policy, and there’s a big difference between allowing pets to stay and actually being pet friendly in terms of amenities. Some of our favourite hotels have offered treats on arrival for our pooches, and provided bowls and a dog bed, as well as having spacious, secure areas for exercise. We’ve even been given a private dining room so that we didn’t have to leave Django (before he gained four sisters) in the room alone while we ate. Now that is pet friendly at it’s best!
Others may even offer pet-sitting services or made to order dog meals. But, be aware that many hotels advertised as pet friendly may only allow dogs, not cats or other species, and even in this case, your dog might not be allowed in any of the hotel’s public areas.
We once booked a pet friendly hotel in Barcelona, and told them months in advance that we had two small dogs. Just a couple of days before we were due to arrive, they contacted us to say we would have to book an extra room as only one dog was permitted in each room, regardless of size. Luckily, we were able to find a last-minute alternative that allowed both tiny terrors in the same room, although it was expensive.
1. Meikleour Arms, Perthshire, Scotland

Two dogs are permitted in each room or cottage, but if you have more, this may be permitted upon request in advance of arrival.
Staff at the Meikleour Arms are animal lovers, with many volunteering at local animal shelters, so you can be assured your dog will receive a warm welcome.
